This set of projects is anchored on the need for pragmatic implementation of cultural competence principles in forensic settings and psychology practice. The first set of projects is an ongoing effort to integrate cultural considerations into forensic evaluations, including competency to stand trial (CST), insanity at the time of the crime (mental state), diminished capacity (sentence mitigation), threat assessment, violence and recidivism risk assessment, and immigration.
The second set of projects was in collaboration with the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC), upon invitation from their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion office. Our lab served as consultation and advisory source, specifically for integrating principles of implicit bias interventions in the classification and custody of DOC inmates. We offered presentations to the DOC Executive Diversity Committee and the Executive Leadership Committee regarding pragmatic implementation of prevention efforts informed by the implicit bias research. In addition, our lab provided training to over 100 DOC leaders regarding implicit bias prevention steps across departments, roles, and functions including supervision, medicine, rehabilitation, re-entry, and community support.
